Oil Light privacy policy

Last updated September 19, 2026, for version 0.8.0

Oil Light tells you whether a packaged food contains seed oils. It does this on your phone. There is no account, no sign-in, no advertising, and no analytics of any kind.

What stays on your phone

The camera. When you point the camera at a label, the words are read on your phone and the picture is thrown away. Nothing is saved to your photo library and nothing is uploaded.

Your history and settings. The products you have scanned, the ones you save, and your choices about which ingredients count are kept on your phone only. Deleting the app deletes them.

Reports. If you tell the app it read a label wrong, the report is kept on your phone, where you can look at it and delete it in the settings. It contains what the app read, what you corrected it to, and any note you wrote, and never your name. This version of the app does not send reports anywhere. If you choose to attach photographs to a report, they are kept with it on your phone.

What leaves your phone

Barcodes, to Open Food Facts. When you scan a barcode the app has not seen before, it asks Open Food Facts, a free public database of food products, for that product's ingredients. The request contains the barcode and nothing about you. Open Food Facts, like any website, can see the internet address the request came from; their own privacy policy covers what they do with it.

Downloads, to Open Food Facts. If you download products to use without a connection, the app asks Open Food Facts for the brand, country or category you picked.

Every request is encrypted. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with advertisers or data brokers.

Permissions

The only permission Oil Light asks for is the camera, to read barcodes and labels. It never asks for your location, contacts or photo library.

Children

Oil Light is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.

Changes

If a later version sends anything more — for example, reports you choose to send, so that mistakes in reading labels can be fixed — this page will say so before that version is released.
